Description
The Stable Block at 6 Church Hill in Morningside, Edinburgh, dates from around 1850 and is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan villa with a basement at the rear. It features a base course, a cill band course at the first floor, architraved windows, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course.
The front elevation has a slightly advanced central bay with a pilastered doorway topped with a dentilled cornice, accessed by steps. This doorway leads to a panelled door and a tiled vestibule, with a window above on the first floor. The outer bays contain windows on both the ground and first floors. To the outer left, there is a modern enclosed staircase with a slated mansard roof.
On the rear elevation, which has an M-shaped roof, there is a central stair window and a small round-arched window at the ground floor. To the right, a three-storey canted window features a half-pitched roof. There is a basement window to the left, a secondary door accessed by steps at ground level, and a single window at the first floor. A small wallhead stack is positioned to the left of centre.
The east elevation includes a modern enclosed staircase and two shouldered wallhead stacks. The west elevation has single windows and a secondary door at the basement level, along with single windows in the central bay and two shouldered wallhead stacks.
The stable block, dated 1860, is a single-storey structure that has been converted for residential use. It features two large openings and a gabled hayloft door, which has been formed into a window, along with a conservatory and three modern dormers at the rear.
The building has timber sash and case windows, mostly with four-pane glazing, although some rear windows have plate glass. The roof is covered with dark grey slate and includes lead flashings, along with five wallhead stacks. The interior was not seen in 1992.
