Description
8 Greenhill Gardens in Edinburgh is a 2-storey, 3-bay L-plan Italianate villa built around 1852. The building is constructed of squared and snecked cream sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings. It has a base course and a band course beneath the eaves that oversteps the first-floor windows, along with raised window surrounds and overhanging eaves.
On the west entrance elevation, there is an open ashlar porch located in the re-entrant angle at the center. This porch is flanked by pilasters to the left and features chip-carved columns with engaged ball finials at cill height, which advance and flank the doorway on both sides. The frieze has modillions, and the cornice includes a pierced parapet that forms a balcony for the first-floor window. The parapet is topped with upturned pyramidal finials, and there is a stone bench. The entrance consists of a two-leaf panelled door with a divided fanlight above. To the outer right, there is a tripartite window at the ground level in the advanced gabled bay, and a single window at the first floor. The outer left bay has single windows. A modern flat-roofed garage is advanced to the outer right.
The north elevation has two bays with single windows at the first floor in both bays. The south elevation features a flat-roofed garage advanced at ground level and a single window at the center of the first floor. The sash and case windows have a margin-paned glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks with moulded octagonal cans.
The boundary walls include a low wall to the street, high coped mutual walls, and a low coped garden wall with a die and ball finial that is linked to the porch. The interior was not seen in 1991.
