Description
Balgair is a mid-19th century, two-storey, four-bay Italianate villa designed in an L-plan. The exterior features harl with sandstone margins and dressings, a base course, quoin strips, projecting eaves, and exposed rafters.
On the southwest (main) elevation, the L-plan includes a squat campanile in the re-entrant angle. The broad gable on the outer left has a tripartite window at the ground level and a three-light round-headed window on the first floor, complemented by a decorative cast-iron balcony on brackets. The campanile, which breaks the eaves at the re-entrant angle, has a corniced and pilastered door at the ground level, a two-leaf panelled door, and a half-glazed vestibule door with a two-pane fanlight. Above, there is a bipartite round-headed window on the first floor, and a dentil cornice with regular square recesses arranged like a Classical frieze. The roof has a shallow pyramidal shape with overhanging eaves. To the right, there is a narrow piend-roofed bay with symmetrically disposed bipartite windows, and the outer right bay features a full-height canted bay window topped with a half-conical slate roof.
The villa has plate glass timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead flashings, and corniced apex stacks with octagonal cans.
The interior was not seen in 1993.
The boundary wall consists of a whinstone wall with harl pointing and boulder coping, along with corniced square piers that have a plinth and urn finial.
