Description
1 Dundonald Road in Glasgow is a picturesque Italianate villa built in 1874. It stands two storeys high with a basement and features an attic tower at the southeast corner. The exterior is made of droved ashlar with polished margins and dressings, while the basement is rusticated. All ground floor windows have recessed margins, and the doorway along with most first-floor windows are round-headed and flanked by strip pilasters.
The south elevation is irregular, showcasing a boldly advanced gabled center bay made of polished ashlar, which has plain quarter columns set at angles. There is a continuous band course that runs over the ground floor to the first-floor cills and lintels. On the first floor, there are two tall arched windows with a blind oculus in the spandrel, and a consoled ashlar balcony. To the left, steps lead down to a tripartite arched doorway that has glazed sidelights, carved foliate spandrels, and a moulded archivolt with a bold keystone. The doorway features a double-leaf panelled door and a vestibule door with a glazed fanlight, along with an arched window above on the first floor. The attic tower has tripartite windows on each face, deeply overhanging timber-bracketed eaves, and a piended roof.
The extreme right bay has a corniced tripartite window at the ground level and a bipartite window above. The villa features sash windows with plate glass glazing, deeply overhanging modillion eaves, and decorative barge boarding at the gable ends, all topped with slate roofs.
The irregular three-bay flank to the south is gabled and includes a two-storey canted window that is splayed above the first floor. The band courses on this flank are continuous with those on the main facade. The rear elevation is constructed of stugged coursed ashlar and has corniced wallhead stacks.
The entire property is surrounded by a low coped ashlar wall, which supports modern cast-iron railings and tall square coped ashlar gatepiers. There is a solid ashlar parapet leading to the steps, which has squat end piers.
