Description
5 Dundonald Road in Glasgow is a curved terrace of tenement buildings dating from around 1890. The structure consists of three storeys and attics, built with polished ashlar stone that is channelled at the ground level and partly cleaned. The terrace features 20 bays arranged in a pattern of 4-4-8-4, though it is not completed as a symmetrical unit, despite likely being intended as such.
No 5 has a four-bay pavilion on the left side. It has steps that oversail the basement leading up to a wide tripartite doorpiece with glazed sidelights, topped with a consoled pediment. The first-floor windows are architraved and alternately feature cornices or pediments, while the second-floor windows are plain. The attic has three round-headed windows under a common pediment, with roundels in the spandrels, flanked by a balustrade. The windows throughout are sash with plate-glass glazing. There is a string-course at the cills and eaves, and a plain main cornice.
Nos 7-13 have similar details to No 5, but with individual flights of steps oversailing the basement leading to paired tripartite doorpieces with glazed sidelights. These doorpieces are supported by consoles that hold a dentil cornice, and the roof balustrade is interrupted by round arched dormers.
The roofs are steeply pitched and covered with slate, featuring tall axial stacks. The steps have an ashlar balustrade with die pedestals, and a low ashlar wall at the basement area supports either an ashlar balustrade or modern cast-iron railings.
