Description

Southpark House, located at 64 Southpark Avenue in Glasgow, dates from around 1850 and is a two-storey, basement and attic, six-bay classical double villa. The building is constructed of polished ashlar sandstone, with droved stone on the basement and sides. It features architraved windows, a band course at ground level, a cill band on the ground floor, a plain entablature, and a cornice that forms a corbelled cill band with aprons on the first floor. The eaves cornice leads to a balustraded die parapet.

The central entrance, which has been altered to the north, is accessed by steps that oversail the basement area. It is flanked by a two-bay Doric portico with paired columns at the center, a triglyph and panel frieze, a mutule cornice, and a balustraded die parapet. The first-floor windows are corniced, while the ground-floor windows on the north side are blocked. The villa has six segmental-headed dormers and plain return elevations with irregular fenestration, as well as a parapet over the outer bays. Dormers are also present on the rear elevation, and there are balustraded parapet walls surrounding the basement area.

The windows are four-pane timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design.

Inside, as seen in 1988, the main rooms feature coffered, corniced ceilings and cast-iron stair balusters. The stairlights are top-lit and include coloured glass.

To the north of the house are former stables, which have pedimented gables and are constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and coping.

The property is also defined by panelled gatepiers with corniced caps and boundary walls made of coped, squared, and coursed rubble.
