Description
1 Horslethill Road is an early 19th century classical villa featuring two storeys, attics, and a basement. The building has three bays, with a later full-height additional bay to the left. It is constructed from polished ashlar stone, with droved ashlar flanks.
The entrance features steps that oversail the basement, leading to a central Doric porch adorned with a mutule cornice and a cast-iron balustrade. The doorpiece is pilastered and recessed, with a tripartite design and an astragalled fanlight above. The ground floor windows are pilastered and corniced, complete with apron panels, while the first-floor windows are architraved with bracketed sills, consoled and pedimented. All windows are sash with plate glass glazing, except for the left bays, which have blind windows. The eaves cornice is complemented by a blocking course that steps up over the centre, and there are corniced wall head stacks.
The additional bay to the left features a single window on the first floor with raised polished margins and an eaves cornice. The east flank presents an irregular four-bay elevation, with the right three bays shallowly advanced and pedimented. The windows on this side also have raised polished margins. The west flank mirrors this window detailing, but includes a modern rendered single-storey addition to the right. The rear elevation is finished in droved ashlar, consistent with the flanks, and features timber bipartite dormers with round-headed lights.
The property is marked by a pair of square corniced ashlar gatepiers. Inside, there is a column screen leading to the hall and decorative plaster cornice work. A notable feature is a stained glass figurative stair window, likely created by Daniel Cottier.
