Meteor Hotel, 5 Racecourse Road, Ayr

The Meteor Hotel, located at 5 Racecourse Road in Ayr, is a mid-19th century classical villa with later additions. This two-storey, three-bay building is situated on a corner and features ashlar stonework, with a channelled design at the ground floor. It has a base course, a cill course at the first floor, an eaves course, and a cornice. The first-floor windows have architraved margins.

On the west elevation, there is a central entrance porch with columns and a pediment, leading up steps to the entrance. The entrance features a modern fascia and two-leaf glazed timber doors, with timber boarding around the letterbox fanlight. Above the entrance, there is a single window aligned with the first floor. Flanking this are tripartite windows set in advanced pedimented bays. A modern extension is located to the right.

The north elevation consists of three bays with regular window placement on both floors, except for a central blind bay. There is also a modern extension on the left. The south and east elevations were not seen during the 1999 inspection.

The building has modern glazing and a piended grey slate roof, which includes a rooflight and a wallhead stack with circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999. Surrounding the property, there are spear-headed iron railings atop a low coped boundary wall, enclosing the site, with a large modern gate leading to Racecourse Road.
