Description

The Dovecot at Press Castle dates from 1607 and was modified in the mid-19th century. It is a two-stage, rectangular-plan structure with two bays, located next to the courtyard wall to the southeast of Press Castle. The exterior is harled with red sandstone ashlar dressings. It features moulded cill and string courses on the east and west sides, corbelled eaves on the east, south, and west, and is topped with ashlar-coped, crenellated parapets.

On the south elevation, which serves as the entrance, there are two bays. To the right is a boarded timber door, and to the left is a timber panelled door. Above these doors is a plaque featuring a coat-of-arms and the inscription 'T A 1607'. There is also a boarded timber opening aligned with the upper floor.

The east side elevation has a boarded timber door centered at the ground level, with a tripartite opening above that contains a timber panel featuring four pointed-arched pigeon holes in each pointed-arched ashlar opening.

The north rear elevation is blind, while the west side elevation has a part-vented single window at ground level, with a blind section above. There is a fixed 9-pane timber window on the west side. The roof is a mono-pitched design made of corrugated iron, set behind the parapet.

The interior was not seen in 1999, but it has been reported to have been gutted for use as a store.
