Description
The Summer House at Polton House dates back to the earlier 18th century and is a two-storey structure with a square plan. It is built from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The openings feature chamfered reveals, and there is an eaves course. On the southwest side, there is a centered window on each floor. The northwest elevation has a forestair supported by some brick shoring, leading to a boarded door that is offset to the right. There is a vestigial wallhead stack centered above.
On the northeast elevation, there are two relieving arches above a square opening, which now contains replacement boarded, two-leaf garage doors, centered at ground level. Above this, on the first floor, there is an iron grille window offset to the right, while grilles have been removed from the other windows. A lean-to addition is present at ground level on the southeast face, with a window centered above it.
The building features a variety of glazing patterns, including replacement eight- and two-pane timber sash and case windows, as well as a fixed plate glass window on the southeast side. The roof is pyramidal with grey slate, swept at the eaves and displaying a diamond pattern on the southwest side. The lean-to addition has a flat roof, and there is a remnant of a lead gutter on the northwest elevation.
Inside, the roof construction is exposed, and there is a chimney-piece that retains a bolection moulded frieze.
