Description

The Cart Shed and Stables at Crawford Bank on Kevock Road in Lasswade date back to the early 19th century, with some later alterations and additions. Part of the main house was demolished in 1963. The building features a two-storey and single-storey asymmetrical design with eight bays, reflecting the Italianate style. It is harled with overhanging eaves.

On the southwest elevation, which is the principal side, the structure is irregular with eight bays, grouped as seven to one. To the left, there is a single-storey lean-to with a seven-bay block, featuring a boarded door in the central bay and a window in each of the flanking bays. To the right, there is a single-storey, single-bay block with a ground-level window and a Serlian French window above, which has a bracketed timber balcony.

The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, is also irregular with seven bays, grouped as four and four. The two-storey block on the left has a modern door at ground level in the bay to the left of centre, with windows in the flanking bays and a wide-set window at the first floor in the bay to the right. To the right, there is a lean-to with a four-bay block, featuring a timber panelled door in the bay to the left of centre, a window in the left bay, and a window in each of the remaining bays to the right, with a gabled northwest end.

The windows throughout include fixed 12-pane, casement, and sash and case lying pane styles. The roof is grey slate with harled, coped stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The outbuilding, which served as a former cart shed and stables, is located to the northeast of the house and is built on ground that falls to the southeast. It is constructed of red brick with cream brick chamfered surrounds to the openings and quoins. This single-storey building has a loft and features an irregular six-bay design, grouped as three and three. The lofted cart shed block on the left has a wide boarded two-leaf door in a taller, separately roofed bay at the centre, along with a dormer window above and a weather vane at the roof apex. To the right is a part-glazed two-leaf door, with a window above at the built-up, weatherboarded level. There is also a stable door in the left bay. The lower stable range to the right has a continuous roof across all three bays, with a window in the centre bay and a square, pyramidal-roofed ventilator at the roof apex above, along with a window in the right bay and a stable door in the left bay.

The outbuilding features fixed 10- and 4-pane windows, a grey slate piended roof on the cart shed block, and a slate pitched roof on the stable range, with overhanging eaves and cast iron rainwater goods.

The boundary walls are made of sandstone rubble with a shaped rubble cope.
