The Cottage, Duns Road, Coldstream

The Cottage on Duns Road in Coldstream dates back to around the 1840s, featuring earlier elements and later additions. This two-storey house is designed in a "cottage" style, with the earlier 19th century section located in the northeast re-entrant angle and an extension in the northwest angle. The building is primarily constructed of tooled ashlar, except for the right elevation, which is made of snecked rubble, and the rear wall of the arm, which is coursed rubble. The extension is rendered and lined to resemble ashlar, while the earlier part is rendered rubble with ashlar dressings. All corners are chamfered, except for those on the earlier and later sections.

The garden front is symmetrical with three bays, featuring a block pediment above a double-leaf panelled door. Canted bay windows with stone copings are present, along with first-floor sash windows, the central one being gabletted and raised through the eaves. The glazing is mostly lying-pane, except for the earlier part, which has 12-pane sashes. The outer bays are gabled with very wide eaves, and the slate roof has brick stacks at the rear. The west elevation includes a tall corniced door and a first-floor sash window with a gablet, also raised through the eaves. A similar gable and dormer can be found at the rear, while both the extension and the earlier part feature piended roofs.
