Dovecot Cottage, The Knapp

Dovecot Cottage, located at The Knapp, is an earlier 18th-century rectangular-plan, lectern-type dovecot that was converted into a cottage in the late 19th century. It is built on sloping ground using rubble construction with ashlar dressings, and features boulders at the base course on the southwest angle, along with concrete cills and lintels. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes a rat-course that is stepped at the end elevations. The front of the cottage has bipartite 6-pane sash and case windows, and the crowstepped end walls are adorned with skewputts. The north wall features three crowstepped pediments topped with ball finials, and there are four intersecting short stacks with cans.

On the southeast elevation, which is the low end of the lectern, there is a multi-pane glazed door with a fanlight in the center, flanked by windows on both sides. The left return elevation is blank, while a modern conservatory is attached to the right return elevation.

The north elevation has a door and window to the right, with a pentice-roofed addition to the left that includes a door with a gabled dormer head and a window on the right return. The far left of the elevation features a modern harled gable end of the conservatory, designed to imitate the original crowstepped style.
