Description
The Dovecot at Kailzie House, dated 1698, is a two-storey, single chamber, square-plan lectern dovecote. It is constructed of random rubble with ashlar long and short quoins, featuring margins and a rat course. The crowstepped gables have ogival-moulded skewputts, and the raised wallhead is topped with plain coping and ball finials at the corners.
On the south elevation, there is a central doorway with a stone lintel dated 1698 and a surround that is rebated for inner and outer doors. This doorway has a replacement timber door and frame, a rat course above it, and an inset central square sandstone block aligned with the door that has a circular opening. The roof features paired roof lights.
The east and west elevations are blind, showcasing ashlar long and short quoins and an ashlar rat course, along with the crowstepped gable. The north elevation is also blind, with similar ashlar long and short quoins and a rat course.
The interior was not seen in 2002, but it is noted that wooden nesting boxes had been removed some time prior. The dovecote has a monopitched grey slate roof, with later paired cast-iron two-pane Carron lights, and the original timber pigeon port is concealed by slates. There is also a later boarded timber door within a timber frame.
