Description
A pair of lodges dating from 1802, originally commissioned for Kailzie House by Robert Nutter Campbell. The lodges were altered in 1920 by John Dick Peddie, with further extensions added later in the 20th century. They are single-storey with attic structures, each built on a rectangular plan. Attached screen walls have arched footgates leading to high, octagonal gate piers. The lodges are constructed from coursed whinstone rubble, with dressings in tabbed polished ashlar, rusticated long and short quoins, an eaves course, and a moulded cornice. Ashlar footgates and gate piers complement the stonework.
The principal north-west elevations have three bays. The central bay is recessed and features an architraved and corniced window, protected by painted wrought-iron security bars to the lower sash. The eaves are supported by mutules, and the outer bays contain a narrow window and a blind, moulded plaque. A central, segmental-headed dormer window is situated in the attic, with slated cheeks and an arched roof.
The south-west and north-east elevations, facing the drive, both feature a central, architraved door with a projecting cornice and shallow segmental pediment. Flanking windows are plain. The elevations facing the gardens have single-storey, flat-roofed extensions with irregular, modern windows.
The south-east (rear) elevations mirror the north-west elevations, with a recessed central bay containing an architraved and corniced window and supported eaves. Blind walls contain a high, blind moulded plaque. A central, segmental-arch, pedimented dormer window is present in the attic, with slated cheeks and an arched lead roof.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 10 and 12 panes. Some north-west windows have dummy sash and case lights with 4 panes at the top and 4 larger panes at the bottom. The roofs are piended, grey slate, with lead ridging and flashings, and flat roofs on the later extensions. Dormers feature slated cheeks and arched lead roofs. Cast-iron rainwater goods are painted, with concealed gutters. Each roofline has a tall ashlar chimney stack with a moulded ashlar neck cope and four modern cans; a smaller, harled stack is present on the later extension of the north-east lodge, with plain cans.
The interiors were not inspected in 2002, but the lodges are in residential use.
The tall, octagonal gate piers are made of ashlar, with matching cornices, caps, and roundel-decorated friezes. The original vehicular access gates are now missing. Screen walls connect with the lodges and contain arched pedestrian entrances with an impost course, ashlar voussoirs, and a projecting moulded wall cornice. The wrought-iron gates have spear-headed dog bars, diamond detailing, spear-headed vertical bars, and a semi-circular gate head. A low, arched wing wall adjoins the north-east lodge at the north angle.
