Description
The Dovecot at Cardrona House dates from the early to mid 18th century. It is a rectangular-plan, lectern dovecote featuring crow-stepped gables and ogee-moulded skewputts. The structure is built of random rubble with a projecting sandstone ashlar rat course and dressings, which were formerly harled.
On the south elevation, there is a centrally placed boarded timber entrance door with a moulded surround and lintel, above which is the rat course; the rest of this elevation is blind. The east and west elevations are also blind, featuring rat courses and sloped crow-stepped wallheads that terminate in ogee-putts. The west elevation has a later inset window below the rat course, with the lintel breaking the rat course.
The north elevation is blind as well, only interrupted by the rat course. There is no original glazing plan, but there is a later inset timber sash and case window with 6-pane glazing in the upper sash; the lower sash and glazing plan are missing. The dovecote has a slated penthouse roof.
Inside, the dovecote consists of a single chamber that formerly contained timber nesting-boxes, which have since been removed.
