Description
This is an 1816 cart shed, with alterations dating to around 1840 and later in the 19th century. It forms part of a U-shaped steading, incorporating later buildings, facing a west-oriented open cattle court. The shed is constructed from coursed whinstone rubble, with whinstone wedge voussoirs over the segmental-arched openings, and rough-hewn whinstone long and short quoins. Some of the cart arches have been bricked up.
The east elevation is a long, two-storey range. The extreme left section is blank, while the remainder of the ground floor features four segmental-headed cart arches. Arches two and three have been in-filled with stone walls up to a level just below the top, incorporating timber-framed glazing within the upper arch. The first and fourth arches have been similarly altered, creating entrances against the outer jambs. The first floor includes two small square windows set high under the eaves, aligned with the piers between arches one and two, and arches three and four. To the right, a set of ashlar steps leads into the steading, alongside a single-storey, multi-bayed range.
The south elevation features a long wall of a slightly later range to the left and centre, with a pair of widely spaced, irregularly positioned doors. Two small, later animal entrances are located at the extreme right of the ground level. A pair of roof lights are also present. Adjoining to the right is a higher, single-storey building with a very large segmental-headed arch in the centre of the elevation. This arch has been in-filled with a large timber sliding door on a full-span timber runner to the right, and stone walling supporting a three-light timber window to the left. Corrugated-iron fills the upper portion of the arch.
The west (cattle court) elevation comprises single-storey end walls, with a canted wallhead to the right of the left end, and a full-height entrance to the left. The right end is blind, with a lower wall adjoining the interior.
The north elevation was not visible during a 2002 survey.
The shed has a variety of glazing planes set in timber frames. The roof is piended and covered with slate, featuring two-pane cast-iron Carron lights and replacement roll ridging. Timber boarded doors are present, including some sliding doors to the larger openings. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are also visible.
The interior retains the original layout, with stone walls and some flagged floors, although some flooring has been replaced. In 2002, the shed was in use as stores.
