Description
The Horsburgh Railway Viaduct is a five-span iron plate-girder bridge built in 1864, crossing the River Tweed. It is a significant early example of plate-girder construction in iron, and one of a pair with the Haughhead Viaduct in the parish of Traquair. The bridge's construction was part of the North British Railway's Edinburgh to Hawick line, which opened in 1845. The route through the Peebles area was complex, with the North British Railway initially serving the north bank and the Caledonian Railway crossing from the west.
The viaduct is constructed with riveted iron plate-girders, with brick infill beneath the spans, supported by tall rectangular cutwater piers of coursed rusticated sandstone ashlar. The riverbank supports have been altered to include a later path and embankment. The original track and ballast have been removed, and a modern footpath now spans the viaduct; evidence suggests service pipes were also once carried across the river to the south.
The viaduct linked Cardrona Station, located on the south side of the River Tweed, to the north bank section of the railway. Cardrona Station opened on 4th July 1855 as part of a line built by the Peebles Railway Company, running from Eskbank to Peebles. This line later formed a loop between Eskbank and Galashiels, connecting several communities. The viaduct and Cardrona Station were formally opened on 10th October 1864. Cardrona Station closed on 5th February 1962, and has since been altered to serve as a sales office for the village of Cardrona and, more recently, the clubhouse for Cardrona Golf Course. The viaduct now provides pedestrian, cycling, and equestrian access, and links the golf course to the clubhouse.
