Description

The Hilton of Knapp is an earlier 19th-century U-plan steading that incorporates a later 18th-century range to the east. It is situated on sloping ground and features a combination of single and two-storey structures. The building is constructed from dark rubble with dressed red ashlar accents and has a slate roof, although part of it has been replaced with modern ridged sheeting. The doors are boarded, and the multi-pane windows include some with ventilating slats at the bottom, as well as ventilating slats at the granary openings. The roofs are piended.

On the southeast elevation, the principal range is recessed in the center and includes three doors and two windows. To the left, there is an out-shot that represents the remains of a horse-mill, while slightly lower bays to the far right are concealed by a cattle court that was raised and re-roofed in 1955. The west angle is advanced at the outer left, and there is a blind gable at the right return angle. The earlier east range is advanced at the outer right, aligning its gable with the lower cattle court to the left, and features a door on the ground floor and an opening on the first floor.

The east elevation has forestairs at the center leading to a gable-headed door on the first floor, with an opening to the left and a glazed opening to the right. The west elevation features an enlarged sliding door to the left and three windows to the right. The north elevation shows a lower range to the left with an enlarged door and two additional doors. There are two rooflights; the threshing mill is located to the right, which has large gable-headed two-leaf doors, two openings, and a smaller door to the left, along with four rooflights.

Inside, the interior has been altered with various floors removed.

To the west, there is an implement shed and a bothy, which is a single-storey rectangular-plan structure with a slightly later bothy attached to the north. This building is made from dark rubble with dressed red sandstone details and features four monolithic piers. The roof is piended slate, although it is now gabled with an ashlar stack at the north end (bothy).

The east elevation of the implement shed has four irregularly placed piers on the left, with a door to the bothy that is slightly recessed to the right. The left and right return gables are blank. The west elevation includes a window to the bothy on the left. Inside the bothy, there is a chimneypiece.
