Description
The Dovecot at Newbigging dates from around 1730 and is a lean-to, double chamber, rectangular-plan dovecot with a crowstepped lectern design. It is constructed of random rubble with large squared sandstone quoins and some ashlar margins. The building features ball-finialled crowstepped gablets, a stepped alighting ledge, ashlar crowsteps, and moulded skewputts.
On the southeast elevation, there are two enlarged doorways, slightly grouped to the left, at ground level. Above these, the alighting ledge leads to two rectangular flight holes located close to the eaves. The pitched roof, which is slated, has partly collapsed. The interior is lined with stone nesting boxes, which are in good condition.
The southwest elevation has a paired arcaded flight hole positioned over the center step of the alighting ledge. The northwest elevation is blank, featuring a straight alighting ledge band and three gablets. The northeast elevation mirrors the southwest elevation.
