Description

The Railway Station and Signal Box in Errol, possibly designed by Andrew Heiton and dated 1847, is a single-storey building with an attic, arranged in an L-plan. It features a station master's house that now serves as a museum. The structure is built of squared and snecked rubble with dressed ashlar margins, and includes hoodmoulds and stone mullions.

On the northwest elevation, the design is symmetrical, featuring a central two-leaf panelled timber door flanked by hoodmoulded windows. There is a later lean-to bay on the outer left. The southwest elevation has an advanced bay to the left with a wide tripartite window at ground level and a single window in the gablehead. To the right, there is a recessed station entrance with a timber porch set in a re-entrant under a verandah supported by four cast-iron columns, along with another wide tripartite window on the outer right.

The southeast elevation, which faces the platform, has an advanced bay to the left featuring a wide corniced canted tripartite window, with a station clock in the upper sash of the centre light. Above this window is a moulded stone with the date '1847' in the gablehead, and there is a further window on the return to the right. The right side has set-back bays with a verandah on five cast-iron columns extending beyond the building to a screen wall at the outer right, and four recessed bays with alternately positioned doors and windows.

The northeast elevation has been slightly altered and includes a variety of elements, such as the advanced gable of the station to the left, a forestair on the return to the right, and the recessed face of the station master's house to the right. The windows feature 4-, 12-, and 16-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are brick stacks with a full complement of cans. The eaves are deeply overhanging with plain bargeboarding.

Additionally, there is a lattice girder and cast-iron footbridge, along with timber picket fencing and gates surrounding the property.
