Description
The Fountain and Market Cross in The Square, Errol, was designed by Johnston & Baxter of Dundee in 1900, with the sculptor being Alexander Neilson from Dundee. It features a red Dumfries sandstone columnar market cross topped with a bronze unicorn finial. At the base, there are Peterhead granite basins, which include small drinking troughs for dogs that receive overflow from the trefoil-plan basins situated below a circular pedestal. The pedestal has a carved lion's head fountain and two bronze panels. One panel displays a crown, the initials 'VR', and the dates '1837-1897' in relief, while the other is inscribed with the message: 'THIS WATER-SUPPLY PRESENTED TO ERROL DISTRICT BY SIR WILLIAM AND LADY OGILVY DALGLEISH OF ERROL, 1897'. Above the pedestal, a moulded cornice leads to a battered column adorned with carved thistles and an Ionic capital, all topped by the unicorn holding a shield.
