Description
The Sherwood Hotel is a mid-19th century, seven-bay symmetrical villa that stands two storeys over a basement. The building features painted ashlar stonework. The three central bays are bowed, with recessed bays on either side that include single-storey projections at the ground level. There is a moulded recessed panel with a round head in the central bay on the ground floor, along with a cill course, a cornice above, and a bracketed balustraded balcony. The first floor has three central windows, while the outer bays contain windows with apron panels. The eaves are deeply bracketed, and the flanking bays have small windows, a blank shield above the ground floor, a cornice, a parapet, and an urn above. Originally, there were end stacks on a plinth with scrolled brackets, but only the plinth of the south stack remains. The roof is piended and covered with slate.
At the east entrance front, there is a recessed door within a shouldered opening, accompanied by shouldered sidelights, situated in a projecting porch that has a bracketed cornice and a parapet above. The advanced bay to the left features tripartite windows. The outer bays are slightly advanced, with a round-headed alcove at the ground floor and a recessed square panel above. Steps on the north side lead down to the basement, which has a balustrade to the area. Balconies supported by decorative brackets are present on the north and south walls.
