Description
The Elderslie Hotel, formerly known as Priory Lodge, is a building designed by architects David and James Hamilton, constructed between 1829 and 1830. This near-symmetrical, two-storey house with a basement features five bays and displays Tudoresque architectural details. A single-storey, single-bay wing extends to the north. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar stone, with the outer gabled bays slightly projecting and topped with parapets, the left one being crenellated.
The entrance, located in the left bay, includes a door with a fanlight and sidelights, sheltered by a decorative cast-iron canopy supported by delicate iron stanchions. Above the entrance, there is a tripartite window. The right bay features a canted window on the ground floor and a single window above. The central bays contain three tall ground floor windows, with basket-arched windows above that have gabled dormer heads. The basement windows are segmental-headed. Throughout the building, there are sash windows, all single with hoodmoulds, and a cornice runs along the top. The gables and dormer heads are adorned with decorative finials, and clustered stacks rise from the slate roof.
To the north, there is a low extension that has a single hood-moulded sash window and an engaged octagonal angle pier to the left. This extension is connected by a modern covered passage to a block located to the south. The property is set behind a low garden wall, which includes square gatepiers.
