Description
The Whitelodge Hotel, located at 34 Charles Street in Largs, is a mid-19th century villa that has been converted into a hotel. This two-storey building features a basement and has an asymmetrical design with three bays. A later 19th century single-storey wing extends to the north, also over a basement.
The exterior is finished in painted ashlar with decorative dressings. Steps lead up to a central recessed door, which is set behind a screen of Roman Doric columns. Above this entrance is a pierced parapet with a cast-iron balustrade that connects the advanced outer bays. The outer bays contain tripartite windows that are canted on each storey to the right, with pilasters on the left and an entablature above the ground floor window. The first-floor windows are round-headed, and there is a single window in the central bay. A continuous cornice runs above the ground floor, with a cill course leading to the first floor. The main cornice and parapet are balustraded over the outer windows, and the building has symmetrically placed chimney stacks.
To the left, there is a three-window bowed extension that connects to the original house by two bays. This extension features a continuous string course above the basement and a pierced parapet above the ground floor, all in painted ashlar. It links to a former rubble-built outbuilding to the northeast, which was converted into a photographer's studio in 1876 by architects Honeyman and Keppie, with a doorway added on Charles Street.
On Charles Street, the projecting porch has a round-headed recessed door with cavetto reveals, channelled bull-faced ashlar, and voussoirs with a massive projecting keystone. The polished ashlar below the broad projecting eaves adds to the building's character.
Inside the main block, there are some late 19th century decorative cornices and plasterwork. The rear hall features an Ionic columned screen that supports an entablature with a round arch above. The former outhouse, now a public bar, has carved roof timbers, although these are concealed by a modern ceiling.
