Description

The Elderslie Hotel, located at Broomfield Place in Largs, is an early 19th century Tudor Gothic house designed by possibly David and James Hamilton. It is a two-storey building with a basement set on a battered plinth, constructed from polished ashlar stone. The south elevation features four bays, highlighted by a Tudor-arched entrance with a hood-mould and a crenellated blocking course. There is a canted ground floor window in the gabled right bay, which includes Gothic traceried upper lights, and a crenellated parapet above a tripartite window. The left side has tall, 8-pane sashes in two recessed bays, with first-floor windows featuring lying-pane glazing and a blind window to the left. The building has a cornice and two pairs of octagonal wall-head stacks on corbelled plinths.

To the east, there is a recessed modern single-storey, three-bay extension that is harled and features crenellations. The west elevation mirrors the detailing of the south side and consists of five bays, with the right bays advanced and gabled canted windows on each floor. The upper windows are set back, while the left bay is advanced with a canted ground floor window and upper sashes adorned with Gothic tracery. The first-floor window is situated in a shallow advanced bay with a crest in a central pediment above the parapet. The inner bays are topped with a cornice and crenellated parapet. All single windows have hood-moulds, with crests in the gables and decorative stone finials, and there are clustered ridge stacks.

The hotel features a slate roof and is built on a raised terrace, which includes a vermiculated retaining wall and a pierced balustrade. The entrance is marked by chamfered square corniced gatepiers.
