Description
This mid to late 19th century villa, located at 17 Arnothill in Falkirk, is set on a prominent site and features two storeys and an attic with an asymmetrical layout and Jacobean detailing. The exterior is constructed of squared, snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The west-facing entrance front has an off-centre projecting entrance bay that includes a single storey porch, which is a later addition. There is a shallow projecting bay to the south with 4-light mullion and transom windows on each floor, and a shaped gable set back behind a balustrade.
The south garden front consists of four bays, with the two outer bays being wider. The western outer bay features a 5-light canted window, while the eastern outer bay has a 4-light squared projection, both of which are two-storey. The recessed two-bay centre has a ground floor opening onto a curved balustraded terrace with steps leading to the garden. There is a boldly consoled balcony on the first floor between the advanced bays, and the outer bays have shaped gables. The decorative balustrade is present on the east, south, and west sides, along with offset corniced chimney stacks at the gable heads and ridge. All windows are either mullioned and transomed or transomed with 1 to 5 lights. A low service range is located to the east.
Inside, the villa retains a fine timber stair and landing, with stained glass windows at the half-landing, original plasterwork, and some chimneypieces. The property also features panelled and ball finialled gate piers at the pedestrian and carriage entrances.
