Description

87 Loughborough Road is a late 19th-century villa that stands two stories tall with an attic and features three bays. The building is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked rubble, with coursed rubble on the sides and rear, and dressed ashlar quoins and margins. It has base and eaves courses, stone mullions, and chamfered arrises.

The south elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a central bay with steps and flanking dwarf walls leading to a portico supported by pink polished granite columns and topped with a pedimented entablature. The entrance features a recessed panelled timber door with a plate glass fanlight and coloured glass windows on either side, along with a window on the first floor. The advanced flanking gabled bays have a moulded blocking course above canted windows on each floor, with keystoned oval finials adorned with scroll-flanked gableheads.

The north elevation displays asymmetrical fenestration, including a broad tripartite stair window at the center and a window to the right at ground level. The west elevation has two windows on the left at each floor and a shouldered wallhead stack on the right.

The stair window and vestibule windows feature coloured, leaded glazing, while the other top-opening timber windows have plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates and decorative terracotta ridge tiles. The chimney stacks are coped with ashlar, featuring ashlar-coped skews, moulded skewputts, and stone finials.

Inside, the villa boasts decorative plasterwork cornicing and ceilings. The hall includes a screen door with etched glass, Ionic columns and pilasters, a panelled dado, and a corner fireplace with a timber overmantel. The staircase features a scale-and-platt design with timber balusters. The southwest room has a timber arcade forming an 'inglenook' with a timber fireplace and a port cupboard. The tripartite stair window and vestibule windows are adorned with Art Nouveau style coloured glass.

The boundary walls are saddleback-coped with inset decorative cast-iron railings to the south, while other areas feature coped rubble walls.
