Strathearn Hotel And Gatepiers, Dysart Road, Kirkcaldy

David Forbes Smith, 1901. 2-storey and attic, 4-bay, rectangular-plan gabled villa with conical-roofed polygonal angle turret; later 20th century additions to N and E not included in this listing. Bull-faced, squared and snecked rubble with polished and droved ashlar dressings, and painted ashlar porch. Splayed base course and eaves cornice continued as string course across gables. Gablehead windows with moulded pediments, shell-detail to stone gable finials; stone mullions and chamfered arrises.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: centre bay with canted Ionic-columned pedimented porch with balustraded parapet, 2-leaf panelled timber door with plate glass fanlight and 2 narrow windows to either side; 3 windows at 1st floor. Flanking advanced gabled bays, that to left with full-height canted 4-light window to each floor, balustraded parapet and small window in gablehead; that to left blank with small window in gablehead; angle turret with 4-light window at each floor, corbel to corniced blocking course and decorative iron weathervane to outer right.

S ELEVATION: gabled outer bays, that to left with window to each floor and in gablehead, that to right with full-height canted 4-light window, balustraded parapet and window in gablehead; bay to centre tripartite window to each floor, balustraded parapet above and modern full-width horizontal window behind.

Modern extension to N and E.

Plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates with red ridge tiles. Coped ashlar stacks with cans, that to E shouldered. Cast-iron downpipes with fleur-de-lys decorated rainwater hoppers.

INTERIOR: entrance hall with segmental-arched doorway, decorative-astragalled screen door, white marble Corinthian columns and pilasters; oak doors, dado and ceiling panelling, Ionic-columned chimneypiece with clock set in mantel shelf and stepped canopy behind; decorative plaster frieze and panelled ceiling. Ground floor rooms have decorative cornices, ribbed and patterned ceilings. Timber staircase with barley-twist balusters and 4-light window with coloured and leaded glass; small segmental-arched gallery to 1st floor landing .

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: coped rubble boundary walls with 2 pairs of rusticated ashlar gatepiers with chamfered angles; inner piers with vermiculated pinnacles, outer with wrought-iron lamp brackets; linked by curved stugged and channelled ashlar screen walls.
