Description
The Strathearn Hotel, located on Dysart Road in Kirkcaldy, is a large villa dating to 1901 and designed by David Forbes Smith. It is a two-storey and attic building with a rectangular plan, notable for its gabled form and a polygonal turret with a conical roof. Later 20th-century additions to the north and east are not included as part of this listing.
The villa is constructed of bull-faced, squared, and snecked rubble stonework, with polished and droved ashlar dressings and a painted ashlar porch. A splayed base course and eaves cornice runs across the gables. Gable windows have moulded pediments, with shell detailing on the stone finials. Stone mullions are present, and arrises are chamfered.
The west-facing entrance elevation is dominated by a central bay featuring a canted porch with Ionic columns, a pediment, and a balustraded parapet. It contains a panelled timber door with a plate glass fanlight, flanked by two narrow windows, and three windows on the first floor. Flanking the porch are advanced gabled bays; the bay to the left has a full-height canted four-light window on each floor, a balustraded parapet, and a small window in the gablehead. The bay to the right is blank, with a small window in the gablehead. An angle turret features four-light windows on each floor, a corbelled section, a corniced blocking course, and a decorative iron weathervane.
The south elevation shows gabled outer bays. The bay to the left has a window on each floor and in the gablehead, while a full-height canted four-light window, a balustraded parapet, and a gablehead window are present on the bay to the right. A tripartite window appears on each floor of the central bay, with a balustraded parapet above and a more recent horizontal window behind.
The building has timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered in grey slates with red ridge tiles, and features coped ashlar stacks, one of which is shouldered and topped with a can. Cast-iron downpipes with fleur-de-lys decorated rainwater hoppers are also present.
The interior features an entrance hall with a segmental-arched doorway, a decorative astragalled screen door, white marble Corinthian columns and pilasters, and oak doors, dado, and ceiling panelling. An Ionic-columned chimney piece includes a clock set into the mantel shelf and a stepped canopy behind it. A decorative plaster frieze and panelled ceiling are also present. Ground floor rooms have decorative cornices and patterned ceilings. A timber staircase with barley-twist balusters leads to a first-floor landing with a small segmental-arched gallery and a four-light window featuring coloured and leaded glass.
The property is enclosed by coped rubble boundary walls with two pairs of rusticated ashlar gatepiers. The inner piers have vermiculated pinnacles, while the outer piers have wrought-iron lamp brackets. Curved stugged and channelled ashlar screen walls connect the gatepiers.
