Description
26 Kirkgate in Irvine is likely an 18th-century, two-storey, three-bay cottage. The building is constructed of rubble stone, with a harled finish on the front and side, and painted at the rear. It features a base course.
On the south elevation, there is a doorway with a reeded surround located off-centre to the right, flanked by two bays. The windows have painted cement margins, with the first-floor windows being smaller than those on the ground floor.
The east elevation has a blank gable end, and the returns serve as buttresses reaching up to the eaves height. The north elevation has openings only at the ground floor, with a lean-to structure on the right side. The west elevation is attached to a neighboring house.
The front of the cottage has timber four-pane sash windows, and it is topped with a dark grey slate roof. There is a later brick chimney situated at the ridge of the separating wall.
The interior was not seen as of 1996. The boundary walls include a later wall to the east that is flush with the gable end, rubble stone to the north (rear), and a lean-to and outbuilding.
