51 Kirkgate, Irvine

51 Kirkgate in Irvine is a mid-19th century building that may include some earlier materials. It is a two-storey and attic structure with five bays, arranged in a 3-2 grouping, and forms part of a mid-terrace pair of houses. The exterior is made of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a base course, eaves band, and cornice.

The principal elevation on the northeast side is asymmetrical. The entrance to No 51 is recessed and framed by a pilastered and corniced doorpiece on the right, which includes a 3-pane, letterbox fanlight. The central bay has a window on each floor, and the outer left bay has similar window arrangements. The entrance to No 53 is located in the right bay, featuring a door with a small-pane letterbox fanlight above, a blank space above that, and a window on each floor in the left bay.

The building has 18-pane timber sash and case windows, and the piend-roofed dormers are slate-hung with 6-pane windows. The roof is covered with dark grey slates, and there are coped skews. A rubble stack is located at the center, with an ashlar stack to the right and a large brick stack on the left, positioned on the party wall with No 49.
