Description
The Public Hall at 43 Kirkgate in Irvine is a late 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay end-of-terrace public building. It features a Free Style design with Dutch and Queen Anne details, constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with a tooled finish and smooth dressings. The building has a base course, a cornice above the ground floor, and an eaves cornice, with rubble on the sides.
On the northeast (principal) elevation, there is a large central doorway framed by a bold, round-arched, channelled doorpiece, topped with a semicircular fanlight that includes small square stained glass lights. The doorpiece is crowned by a broken swan-neck pediment that holds a broken pedimented tablet with a ball finial. To the right, there is a bay featuring a bipartite window in a plain opening at the ground floor, and a tall columnar mullioned Venetian window with a balustraded apron at the first floor, which lights a large hall. This window is set within a large curvilinear gablehead that has a panelled frieze and a ball finial above a segmental pediment.
The southeast elevation displays a gable end with a later flat-roofed addition on the left at ground level and a window to the left on the first floor. An advanced wing to the left has rubble windows with ashlar margins, while later flat-roofed additions obscure parts of the elevation.
The building features timber sash and case windows with an individual glazing pattern on the east front. The roof is covered with grey slate and has coped skews and ashlar gablehead stacks.
