Description

The Police Station at 1-3N Port Brae in Peebles was built in 1881 and is a two-storey, six-bay structure located on a sloping corner site. It is constructed from coursed stugged cream sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings. The building features ashlar mullions and transoms with chamfered arrises, a first-floor cill course, an eaves course, and crowstepped gables.

The central three bays are symmetrical, showcasing a tripartite window at the ground floor, which is topped by a pedimented aedicule with a date panel at the first floor. This section also includes a consoled wallhead stack. On either side of the central bay, there are roll-moulded round-headed doorways with keystones, each featuring two-leaf panelled doors and a plate glass fanlight, with the left one being coloured. Above these doorways are bipartite windows at the first floor. The outer right bay has a full-height piend-roofed canted window, which is bipartite at the front. The inner left bay contains a tripartite window at the ground floor and a bipartite window at the first floor, which has a hoodmould stepping over a panel and gable. The irregular bay on the far left includes a door and window to the basement, a plate glass shop window above, and a window at the first floor that breaks the eaves with a gabled dormerhead, which is part of the adjoining property at 75-77 High Street.

The building features timber three-pane sash and case windows, with the canted window having six panes, all running behind transoms. The roof is covered with grey slates, and it has crowstepped skews and beak skewputts, along with corniced ashlar stacks. The interior was not seen in 1994.
