Customs House, Dock Road, Ardrossan

The Customs House on Dock Road in Ardrossan was built between 1840 and 1846. This two-storey, three-bay building was originally used for customs and excise and is designed in a plain classical style on a corner site. The exterior features painted coursed and random rubble, with stone dressings in a contrasting color. The rear elevation is made of coursed red sandstone rubble.

The building has a base course, banded string courses, and a corniced eaves course topped with a low parapet. The principal elevation includes a corniced and pilastered doorway that is partially blocked. On the right side facing Dock Road, there are two bays with a simple pilastered doorpiece, while the left side facing Harbour Road has one bay.

The west (rear) elevation has an advanced gabled bay on the left and two bays on the right, with a later window added to the far right at ground floor level. Most openings have been blocked, but some timber windows remain at the rear. The roofs are bowed, piended, and pitched, covered with grey slates. There is a central coped brick ridge stack with circular clay cans and a coped and rendered gable end stack.
