Description

The Dock Buildings on Ferry Street in Montrose were designed by James Leslie, Harbour Engineer, around 1853 to 1860. This large, three-storey, thirteen-bay classical structure serves as a Custom House and Warehouse, with additional buildings creating a quadrangle along three streets. The ground floor features fine sandstone ashlar, while the second and third floors are finished with stugged and pointed stone, and the rear is squared and snecked.

On the principal south elevation, there is a central vehicle entrance that is segmental-arched, vermiculated, and corniced. Above this entrance, there are warehouse loft door openings centered on the first and second floors, along with a raised wallhead that includes an open pediment and a clock. The flanking bays feature two inner bays with windows on all three floors, while the third bay has a ground-level entrance in a rusticated doorpiece with an entablature. The fourth bay has a window at ground level, the fifth bay has a plain doorway, and the outer bay has a window at ground level.

The west elevation consists of three bays, with a central doorway at ground level featuring a six-panel door, and windows above on the first and second floors, along with flanking windows. The east elevation also has three bays, with a former door at ground level now converted into a boarded window. The north elevation is a ten-bay rear elevation, with the bays at both ends blocked.

The building previously had twelve-pane glazing, which is now either in disrepair or boarded up. It has a grey slate piended roof and a brick wallhead stack on the northwest side.

There are ancillary structures, including single-storey buildings on Ferry Street and Erskine Street that are partially demolished or in disrepair. Additionally, there is a four-storey and attic, six-bay warehouse on Caledonian Street, constructed of squared and snecked sandstone. This warehouse features a wallhead gable at the center with a circular opening, two-bay gable ends, and a rear elevation with one bay on the extreme left. The windows are either blocked or boarded, and it has a grey slate pitched roof with stone skews and skewputts.
