Description

8 Melville Gardens is a late 19th-century, two-storey and attic, terraced tenement designed in a colony style, located on a corner site with a slightly curved west facade at the northern end. The building features sandstone ashlar on the front and sides, with squared and snecked stone at the rear. Notable architectural details include a base course, a first-floor cill band course, an eaves band course, and raised quoins.

The west elevation is symmetrical, with bays arranged in a 3-1-3 configuration. The ground floor windows have corniced heads, while the first-floor windows feature segmental-arched lugged heads. The central bay includes a keystoned, segmental-arched pend entrance at the ground level, with a window centered above it on the first floor. Flanking the central bay are similar three-bay houses, each with a central corniced and consoled doorpiece, a six-panel door, a rectangular fanlight, and a window centered above, with canted dormers above the flanking bays.

The north elevation has a blank gable end and features a bowed link quadrant wing that adjoins the tenement at 3-7 Melville Gardens. The south elevation presents a two-bay gable end with windows at both the ground and first floors, and a stone mullioned bipartite window in the gablehead, which has plain margins.

The east elevation exhibits irregular fenestration on both the ground and first floors. To the left of the pend entrance, there is one doorway and two flanking windows, while to the right, there are three windows and another doorway. A stone flight with cast-iron balusters leads to a first-floor entrance on the left, with a window to the right and a canted dormer above, along with a later piended dormer to the left. A curved stone flight with decorative cast-iron railings on the right leads to two first-floor entrances, with two windows on either side and canted dormers above.

The building features four-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, stone skews, an ashlar ridge stack and gablehead stack on the north side, and a brick gablehead stack on the south. Cast-iron finials adorn the dormers, and cast-iron cornice guttering is present on the front.
