38-40 Main Street, Gorebridge

38-40 Main Street in Gorebridge is a late 19th-century building that features a two-storey, three-bay rectangular plan shop with a tenement above. The exterior is constructed from irregular coursed tooled sandstone, accented with stugged and polished dressings. It has long and short quoins and chamfered reveals.

The principal elevation is nearly symmetrical, showcasing a central segmental arched doorway that is topped with a polished hoodmould, which is decorated with moulded corbels and a keystone. To the left of this doorway is a slightly later door that has a polished surround. There are segmental arched windows on the outer left and right, also featuring carved moulded corbels and a keystone. The first floor has regular fenestration.

The northeast and southwest elevations are obscured by an adjacent terrace, while the northwest elevation was not visible in 1997. The ground floor has four-pane fixed timber windows, while the first floor has two-pane replacement sash and case windows. The roof is made of grey slate with stone skews, and it features cast iron rainwater goods and concrete faced coped gablehead stacks. The interior was not seen in 1997.
