Description
13 Hunterfield Road in Gorebridge is a single-storey, three-bay former public library built in 1886 by Robert Smith, featuring Tudor Gothic architectural style. The exterior is constructed from tooled squared and snecked sandstone with droved dressings, long and short quoins, chamfered reveals, hoodmoulds, overhanging eaves, and plain bargeboards on the gables.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, is asymmetrical with a gabled porch that slightly projects from the center bay, containing a timber panelled door and a letterbox fanlight. There is a window to the left return, a bipartite window in the advanced gabled bay to the right, and another window in the left bay.
The south elevation is also asymmetrical and made of snecked sandstone rubble, featuring seven bays with a blank bay on the outer left. There is a small window in the penultimate bay to the left and another window in the third bay from the left, both set in gables. The fourth and fifth bays were added in 1891 and are advanced within a central gable, each with a window. A boarded timber door with a two-pane fanlight is located in the left return, along with a brick lean-to addition with a boarded timber door in the penultimate bay to the right and another brick lean-to with a corrugated iron roof at the base of the gable on the outer right.
The east elevation is asymmetrical and consists of three bays, with a 20th-century lean-to addition between the center and right bays. The fenestration is regular in the center and left bays, with a brick lean-to on the outer left and a bipartite window with a relieving arch in the gable to the right.
The north elevation is asymmetrical and has five bays, with windows in the center and outer left bay that break the eaves and feature cat slide roofs. A shouldered chimney in the penultimate bay to the left has a carved quatrefoil panel that reads "RD 1886" (for Robert Dundas). There is a gabled timber door with a two-pane fanlight in the penultimate bay to the right, a tripartite window in the outer right bay with a relieving arch, and a carved tablet displaying the lion rampant (for Dundas) set in the gablehead.
The building predominantly features two-pane and four-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a lead ridge, cast iron rainwater goods, and coped tooled shouldered wallhead stacks. The interior was not seen in 1997.
