Description
Robert Smith, 1885. Linear row of 3 single storey cottages. Squared and snecked tooled sandstone rubble walls. Crowstepped gables, projecting crowstepped porch to front and crowstepped outshot wing to rear of each cottage. Raised surrounds, cills and hoodmoulds to windows; raised surrounds and hoodmoulds to doors.
W (FRONT) ELEVATION: 10-bay elevation with central door and flanking windows to each cottage. Symmetrical apart from extra window to far left of No 74. Chamfered quoins with plain and moulded stops to projecting porches; crowstepped gableheads with skews and surmounting finials. Thistle finial to central porch; plaque in apex bears initials 'R.D.' (Robert Dundas of Arniston) and date 1885. Ball finials and plain raised stone plaques to outer porches. Modern doors with lugged surrounds, segmental-arched fanlights and hoodmoulds. Plaque inscribed 'Newbyres Row' to No 74.
N ELEVATION: hexagonal window to left.
E (REAR) ELEVATION: partially seen; outshot to each cottage.
S ELEVATION: window to left; 2 windows in outshot.
Predominantly 2-pane timber sash and case windows. 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows and rooflights to No 74. Grey slate roof; plain terracotta ridge; 2 corniced gable apex stacks; 2 corniced central ridge stacks; corniced apex stack to each rear outshot. 2 polygonal clay cans to central right stack; circular cans elsewhere. Lead ridges to outshot roofs. Cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers.
