Description

20 and 20A Victoria Road in Gourock is a single-storey Arts and Crafts villa built around 1900, with a two-storey section at the rear due to the sloping ground. The exterior features white harl with red sandstone dressings, a red brick base course, and a band cill course at the first floor to the rear. It has ashlar mullions with rounded edges, sloping cills, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and plain bargeboards on the gables.

The south (front) elevation has three bays, with an advanced canted bay on the left that includes bipartite windows on each side and a tall wallhead stack on the right return. The central bay features a basket-arched doorway accessed by steps, surrounded by a stylised Gibbsian design, with a tall tripartite window with decorative stained glass to the right. The right bay contains a sunk flat-roofed garage, with a small single window and a bipartite window above.

On the west elevation, there is a two-storey canted projection of an inglenook fireplace on the left, with small stained glass windows on the outer sides and a tall wallhead stack. The east elevation features an advanced gable with a window at the gablehead and a corbelled corner above the ground floor on the outer right. There is also a small projection with a catslide roof in the re-entrant angle to the left.

The north (rear) elevation has three bays, with a gabled bay on the left that has a tile-hung gablehead, a rectangular projection with a bipartite window, and a secondary door on the return with a piended roof at ground floor level, and a tripartite window above. There are canted bays with tripartite windows at both the ground and first floors. The right bay features a two-storey canted window with bipartite windows at the front, an ashlar panel with a blank armorial shield at the gablehead, and a piended roof.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, with 6-pane upper sashes and plate glass glazing in the lower sashes. The roof is covered with green slate and red ridge tiles, and the stacks have ashlar cornices, including two wallhead stacks and a central stack. The eaves gutter is moulded. The interior was not seen in 1993.
