Description
Ashley Hall is an early 20th-century Arts and Crafts style villa situated within Ashley Hall Gardens, Linlithgow. The building is constructed of cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, with rustication at intervals. Portions of the upper storey feature harl and half-timber detail. The ground floor of a service block and chimney stacks are built of red brick. A base course and overhanging eaves are present.
The north (entrance) elevation presents three asymmetrical bays. A prominent, taller, crowstepped gabled bay is centrally located, and features a handsome tripartite bowed stair window with corbelled timber mullions and transoms, incorporating leaded and stained glass. A small understair light and a gablehead window are also visible. Deep brackets support the skewputts. A broad timber-gabled porch with a red-tiled roof is positioned to the left; this includes a tripartite doorpiece with a panelled door flanked by side lights, and a window above at the first floor. A single-story ashlar canted bay is located to the right, containing a single architraved window with a bracketted cornice that extends above the window, along with a stepped blocking course; another window is set above at the first floor.
The east (side) elevation shows three asymmetrical bays to the right, fronted by a metal fire escape stair. A door and a first-floor window are positioned to the left, with two advanced bays to the left featuring a brick ground floor.
The south (rear) elevation is asymmetrical, with an advanced wide bay to the right, its lop-sided gable broken by a tall set-off stack, which is corbelled at the first floor. To the right of this is a lower two-story bay with a window at ground and first floor levels. Two widely spaced windows are positioned at ground level to the left, with an angled window above at the first floor, continuing on the left return. A small canted oriel is set high into the gablehead under a jettied apex. A recessed wing is present to the left, featuring a broad full-height canted window with a tile-hung border, and a heavy moulded cornice. A small window is positioned to the right at ground level.
The west (side) elevation has a full-height canted window with a 1-2-1 arrangement to the outer left, which is covered by a timber-bracketed gabled roof with half-timber detail to the gable. A long timber balcony running across the wall to the right is supported on timber posts, though it is noted to be in poor condition. A variety of glazing patterns are used, with plate glass to the lower sash of many windows, multi-pane upper sections in sash and casement windows, and casement lower with multi-pane glazing in metal frames. The red tile roof incorporates two flat-roofed tile-hung dormers to the north, one to the east, and one to the south. Tall stacks with original cans are also present.
The interior includes a central hall with fine timber panelling and a half-turn staircase with landings.
