Description

12 Victoria Road in Gourock is a single-storey, asymmetrical Arts and Crafts villa built in 1894, featuring a raised basement at the rear due to the sloping ground. The exterior is constructed from red sandstone, squared and snecked bull-faced rubble, with polished dressings. It has a base course, ashlar mullions, and half-timbered gableheads with plain bargeboards, along with overhanging eaves that reveal exposed rafters.

On the southeast (front) elevation, the villa has advanced gabled outer bays, with a canted window on the left and paired windows on the right. The central bays are set beneath deep overhanging eaves, featuring a plain doorway flanked by single and bipartite windows. Above, there are two semicircular leaded barrel dormers.

The northwest (rear) elevation is two-storey, with advanced gabled outer bays that include a moulded cill course at the first floor. The right side has bipartite windows, while the left side features windows framing an inscribed panel at ground level and a corbelled canted oriel window with an ogival roof above. The centre bay has a modern porch currently under construction (as of 1993) at ground level, with a canted window above that has a finialled piend roof.

The northwest elevation includes a secondary doorway, which is now blocked, on the outer right, and features irregularly spaced windows. The southwest elevation has some small windows at ground floor level.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, with small-pane upper sashes and plate glass glazing on the lower sashes. The roof is covered with rosemary tiles, and there are two corniced and banded ashlar ridge stacks.

Inside, there is an impressive inglenook fireplace with timber carving and panelling that stretches along the long side of the drawing room, incorporating a painting above the fireplace and painted plasterwork on the upper half of the wall. There is also a timber fireplace in the adjoining room.
