Description

This is a two-storey, asymmetrical Arts and Crafts villa, designed by A.N. Paterson and dated 1908. It is located at 7 Moorfield Road and 12 Golf Road, Gourock, and sits within a steeply terraced garden to the north. The exterior is white harl with red sandstone dressings and a red brick base course. Architectural features include ashlar mullions, rounded reveals, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and a curved corner turret with a conical roof.

The front (east) elevation has three bays and a band cill course at the first floor level. The central bay features a doorway with a stylised Gibbsian surround (banded and roll-moulded), leading to a slated porch set within the re-entrant angle with the outer bay. Above the doorway, a keystoned bull's-eye window is visible. The curved corner bay to the right has a conical roof and bipartite windows facing east and north. The left bay contains bipartite windows.

The south elevation is also three bays, with an advanced gabled bay to the right featuring a two-storey, quadripartite canted window. A secondary doorway, set within a projecting vestibule, is centrally located, flanked to the right by a small stained glass window. Above is a tripartite transomed stair window with stained glass, now enclosed within a glazed sun-porch. To the left, a bipartite window is found at ground floor, with a first-floor window breaking the eaves. A single-storey service wing with a gambrel roof projects to the outer left, featuring a tripartite window with timber mullions.

The north elevation also has three bays, with a band lintel course at ground floor level. The curved corner bay, as seen from the east, is located to the outer left. The central bay contains a narrow, round-arched window at ground floor, with stained glass, previously lighting an inglenook; it is topped with a tall ashlar keystone and corniced panel. The bay to the outer right has tripartite windows at ground and first floor levels. A balcony with decorative iron railings, supported by timber brackets rising from stone corbels, sits at first floor level. The centre light of the first-floor window breaks the eaves in a semicircular, pedimented ashlar gablehead, displaying a datestone and armorial carvings.

The west (rear) elevation features a single-storey service wing projecting to the outer right, with a lean-to roof turning to the south elevation. Timber sash and case windows are present, with six-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes. The roof is covered in piend and platform slates, with wallhead stacks, some linked to the roof.

The interior is characterised by detailed timber doors and geometric detailing to panelling and ceilings. Two timber inglenook fireplaces at ground floor level have been removed, though one remains at first floor level.
