Description

22 Millig Street in Helensburgh is a two-storey, asymmetrical Scottish Arts and Crafts villa designed by A N Paterson in 1895. The exterior is harled with red sandstone dressings, featuring raised sandstone margins around the windows, cornicing at the ground level on the main elevations, and sandstone cills and lintels elsewhere. The building has a crowstep gable.

On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a gabled section with a stack at the apex. The central entrance features a sandstone architrave with an open-apex pediment above, leading to a panelled fanlit door that has lead-pane glazing in the fanlight and upper panels. A deep-set half-glazed vestibule door is present, and above it is a window with a roll-moulded architrave and apron, set within the tympanum of the door's pediment. To the outer left, there is a slightly recessed bay with a ground-level window, and sandstone quoin detailing to the right below a kneeler. An engaged circular tower is located at the right angle.

The south elevation, facing the garden, features the angle tower on the outer left, with three windows at both the ground and first floors. There are cill and lintel courses for the first-floor windows, and a low conical roof with deep eaves. To the right, a lop-sided crowstepped gabled bay contains two ground-level windows and one first-floor window to the left. A gabled dormer is situated above a window on the far right at ground level. There is also a later single-storey wing on the outer right.

The north elevation, which is the rear, has a stair window that breaks the eaves at the centre. It features a slate-hung, swept roof and a tripartite timber window with a crossbar, showcasing lead-pane glazing with some stained glass. Each light has a segmental arch. Later single-storey lean-to service blocks flank this elevation.

The villa primarily has sash and case windows, with plate glass in the lower sashes and six-pane glazing in the upper sashes. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are dormers flanking the stair window at the rear. The building has ashlar coped skews with roll skewputts on the west elevation and ashlar coped stacks.

Inside, the villa retains original chimneypieces and features a timber balustered stair.
