Description

Auchenteil is an asymmetrical, two-storey villa dated 1864. Constructed of stugged and snecked red sandstone, painted white to the rear, with ashlar dressings, it features a first floor that breaks the eaves at intervals. The design incorporates a base course, single and bipartite pointed-arch windows with ashlar mullions to the bipartites. The detailing includes stop-chamfered arrises with drip moulds, hoodmoulds with nailhead label-stops to the doorpiece and some windows, and an overhanging eaves with bargeboarded gables. Droved rubble band courses are also present.

The south (entrance) elevation is dominated by a pointed-arch doorpiece incorporating colonnettes, nailhead detail to the capitals, a fine pierced stone fanlight composed of four small pointed-arch lights, a decoratively boarded door, and a deep-set vestibule door with etched glazing inscribed with the monogram 'CH'. A pierced stone balustrade sits to the left of the doorpiece. An original downpipe to the left is dated 1864. A gabled dormerheaded window is positioned above the doorpiece. A gabled bay to the left displays two narrow windows at ground level, with a central chimney wall rising to the apex. A broader, taller, advanced gabled bay to the right contains a bipartite window at both ground and first floor levels, and a small pointed-arch attic light to the gablehead. A lower, single-storey, L-plan wing extends to the right, with a gabled window breaking the eaves on its south face, and a door on its return to the right.

The west (side) elevation presents a two-storey gabled wing with a canted window at ground level to the west face, decorated with a cornice and lights arranged 1-2-1. A bipartite window sits above, and a small window punctuates the gablehead. A window is present on the return to the right, and another at ground level to the outer right, with a dormerheaded window above at the first floor level.

The north (rear) elevation features an off-centre gabled bay to the left, incorporating a door and two small windows to the gablehead, with a row of corbels below. There are two windows to the left of the door and three to the right. Two dormerheaded windows are set to the right, and one to the left. A single-storey wing abuts to the far right.

The villa has plate glass sash and case windows, and a grey/purple slate roof with tall corniced stacks and original rainwater goods.

The interior retains corniced ceilings and a fine iron balustrade to the staircase, with each baluster bearing the monogram 'CH'.

The boundary walls are defined by squat, red sandstone ashlar piers with battered bases, chamfered angles, and low pyramidal caps. Rubble boundary walls and flanking quadrant walls, with ashlar copings, complete the setting.
