Description

Dated 1868, the villa at 36-36A Dick Place, Edinburgh, is a two-storey building with a basement to the rear, originally a three-bay rectangular plan, but later subdivided. The exterior is constructed of squated and snecked sandstone rubble, with stugged and coursed ashlar to the north and west elevations. A base course, dividing band, overhanging eaves, exposed rafters, raised shaped quoins, and chamfered reveals are also present.

The north (entrance) elevation features two carved stone griffins flanking steps leading to a recessed entrance bay on the right. An advanced and architraved round-arched doorpiece (at No. 36) contains a keystone, engaged columns with carved capitals, a deep-set panelled door, a plate glass fanlight, and a bracketed cornice. Above, an advanced panel incorporates a carved name and date tablet set within a shaped round-arched frame, topped with a small bracketed cornice. A circular blank tablet breaks the eaves at the gablehead. Single windows are located at ground and first floor levels to the left. A central, advanced, gabled bay to the main block displays a tripartite corniced doorway (at No. 36A), which was altered from a ground floor window, bipartite stair windows at the first floor, and a blinded keystoned oculus above. Single windows are on the ground and first floors in the flanking bays.

The east elevation has single windows on both ground and first floors. The west elevation showcases a two-storey advanced entrance bay to the left, featuring two round-arched, keystoned ground floor windows, a single window above with a gable breaking the eaves. A secondary entrance with a fanlight is positioned at the principal floor to the right, accompanied by a single window above.

The south elevation includes a two-storey recessed bay with a basement and loggia to the left, containing a single window at the principal floor and another with a gablet above. A full-height canted window flanks the main house to the right, and an advanced tripartite window sits at the basement to the outer right, supported by a bipartite window above.

The villa features plate glass sash and case windows with small internal astragals in the upper panels and 30-pane stair windows. The grey slate piended roof has lead flashing, eaves guttering, two shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks with moulded cans, and a stone finial at the main gable.

The interior includes a wood panelled entrance hall with decorative plaster mouldings.

The property is enclosed by a high, coped rubble wall to the street, which incorporates a coped pedestrian gateway to the east. Ashlar gatepiers with chamfered angles and cornices stand on the west side, and high rubble boundary walls extend from these.
