Description

37 and 37A Mansionhouse Road is a 2-storey, 3-bay L-plan villa built around 1860, designed in the style of David Bryce. The building features sandstone rubble construction with squared and coursed stugged ashlar on the entrance elevation. It has a base course, dressed quoins, chamfered reveals, and projecting eaves.

The entrance elevation includes a gabled timber porch with a finial, located in the re-entrant angle and supported by three Jacobean piers. It has a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. To the right, there is an advanced gabled bay with a canted window that sweeps to the gablehead, a square blank tablet set in the gable, and a single window to the left at ground floor with a dormer above.

The north elevation is blank, while the south elevation features a small round-arched window at the first floor and a sensitive single-storey extension added in 1985. The building has plate glass sash and case windows and a grey slate gabled roof, which is M-gabled to the south with gablehead stacks and a wallhead stack to the north, as well as moulded octagonal cans.

Inside, the dining room is adorned with a richly decorated plaster cornice. The property is enclosed by low ashlar coped boundary walls to the street, topped with wrought iron railings featuring cast 2-leaf spearheads, and high ashlar coped boundary walls surrounding the house.
