Description

This villa at 24 Mansionhouse Road, The Grange, Edinburgh, was built around 1861 in the style of James Campbell Walker. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure made of pinkish grey hammer-dressed sandstone, which is squared and snecked, featuring contrasting dressings and chamfered reveals. The building has base and eaves courses, as well as a string course at the first-floor cills.

On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a two-leaf panelled door with a leaded rectangular fanlight above and a hoodmould. There are single windows above the door and flanking to the left at both the ground and first floors. To the right, there is a canted bay that sweeps to a square shape at the first floor, topped with a gable that has a blank rectangular tablet in the gablehead and a stone finial. The building features distinctive vertical banding on the door and window surrounds, as well as on the quoins.

The north elevation has a small window at the ground floor and two single windows at the first floor. The south elevation is blank, but there is a small glass lean-to with a stone-faced addition behind it.

The villa has four-pane and plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a double pitch, with ashlar coped gables, bracketed skewputts, corniced end stacks, octagonal cans, and a moulded eaves gutter. The original rainwater goods include fleur-de-lys gutter fixtures.

The interior was not seen in 1990. There is a low boundary wall to the street, which rises at the gateway to the south.
