Description

This building, located at 32 and 32A Mansionhouse Road in The Grange, Edinburgh, dates from around 1853. It is a two-storey, four-bay double villa that was expanded to five bays with the addition of a recessed bay to the north in 1900, along with further subdivisions. The exterior features coursed stugged ashlar with a rusticated ground floor, while the sides and rear are constructed of squared and snecked rubble. The ground floor windows are set in round-arched panels, and the first-floor windows have architraves. The building includes a base, dividing band, and blocking courses, as well as impost and eaves cornices.

On the west elevation, the entrances are located at the third and fifth bays, featuring deep-set panelled doors flanked by Greek Doric columns in antis, with arched plate-glass fanlights above. The fenestration is regular on both the ground and first floors. The north elevation has two windows on the first floor. The south elevation has a low addition that is designed in a sympathetic style, connected to a much larger extension. The east elevation includes a single-storey service wing on the outer right and a two-storey extension behind, with regular fenestration in the remaining bays.

The windows on the west side are four-pane and plate glass sash and case, while the east side mainly features twelve-pane sash and case windows. The roof is a grey slate piended design, with an original mutual corniced stack situated between the third and fourth bays, and a later shouldered and corniced stack to the north.

The interiors were not seen in 1990. There is also a low ashlar coped boundary wall that rises to the south.
