Description
26 and 26A Mansionhouse Road is a villa built around 1860 in the style of James Campbell Walker. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure that was subdivided into two in 1956. The building features pinkish hammer-dressed sandstone that is squared and snecked, with cream-colored dressings and chamfered reveals. There are base, dividing, and eaves courses.
On the west elevation, there is a hoodmoulded single window, which was formerly the entrance, at the center of the ground floor. Above this, there are single windows flanking to the left and a canted bay with carvings on the square flanking to the right. A gablehead slit window is located above, topped with a stone finial. The design includes a distinctive use of horizontal and vertical banding on the door and window surrounds, as well as on the quoins.
The north elevation features a window at the first floor. The south elevation is blank but has a later entrance to the ground floor and forestairs leading to the first floor, with further additions behind.
The villa has four-pane and two-pane sash and case windows. It is topped with a grey slate double-pitched roof, ashlar coped gables, bracketed skewputts, corniced end stacks, and octagonal cans with additional caps. The eaves gutter is moulded, and there are modern rainwater goods.
The interiors were not seen in 1990. There is a low ashlar coped boundary wall to the street, which rises at the gateway to the south. Additionally, there are two detached garages, one built in 1829 and the other in 1972.
